Weekend Wind Down

Once more unto the chill zone go I. Friday night at Rev/Bar 32 was good fun! And now the rest of my weekend has been sleepy time.

Josef Salvat definitely falls under the “lesser known” category but is one of Canberra’s finest. I saw this guy at a charity event at Tilley’s last year and he was phenomenal! Can’t guarantee he’ll continue on with his music as I understand he’s also making his way through a law degree at ANU.
Even though I graduated YEARS ago I thought I’d check out the Orientation Week at ANU this year. And lo and behold there was a free mixed cd floating around with a few students’ songs, including Josef.

Holly Throsby – Not the Girl You Think You Are

Holly Throsby is quite lovely but has always been a bit hit and miss, in my opinion. Her folky approach is sometimes beautiful, sometimes boring. Her cover of Crowded House’s Not the Girl is remarkable though and I like it a lot more than the original! This lady knows her stuff, let’s hope she shares more of it.

Ben Folds Five – Air

Ben Folds is pretty great. As Five he was cool, as a soloist he’s even better. My friend posted on facebook this awesome video of him on Chat Roulette. Hee hee he’s got a good sense of humour that Foldsy!

Cicada – Don’t Stare at the Sun

Well for some reason I haven’t seen much Cicada emerge. Which is sad because I was all “omg keep an eye on these guys next year because people will love the album belatedly!” I guess I am wrong but here’s another track from the album. Let me know what you think, k? 🙂

New Buffalo – Misery and Mountains, Arrows and Bows

An oldie from New Buffalo. I love all the instruments used in this song, building on the piano. It looks like Sally Seltmann (aka Sally Russell, aka New Buffalo) has just released an album called Heart That’s Pounding. I will have to check it out!

As much as I love Ben Folds, I can’t say I was too impressed with Way To Normal. With the expection of the Regina Specktor duet of course. she’s amazing.
